BMX Bikes

BMX bikes are specially designed for the type of riding that the rider will undertake on them. In general terms a BMX bike will be different to a regular bike in that it will have traction designed tyres and a lighter frame than the norm. Most BMX bikes will come with 20 inch wheels although models can range between 16-24 inches depending on what the bike will be used for.

In general terms BMX bikes will be used either for racing or jumping on dirt tracks or for freestyle riding where the rider performs tricks and stunts. Types of freestyle riding include Flatland, Ramp, Park and Dirt Street. The bike you use for your chosen form of freestyling or for dirt jumping will need to be sturdier than a racing BMX bike as it will take more strain. So, a racing bike will tend to have a lighter frame and fewer features than a freestyle/jump bike for example.

Some people will buy a ready made BMX bike to suit them off the shelf. These bikes will come with everything you need to get riding but can still be customised if you prefer. Other people actually prefer to buy a custom built BMX bike or, indeed, to build their own. This route gives you the advantage of getting a bike that is uniquely suited to you and your BMX preferences.
